Historical context
In 2013 Mercedes needed a teammate for Hamilton. Fernando Alonso was the first choice. The 2014 W05 was absolutely dominant, winning 16 of 19 races. If Alonso instead of Rosberg had taken that seat, the history of modern F1 would be completely different.
The real 2014 season
The year 2014 revolutionised Formula 1 with the arrival of turbo-hybrid engines, and marked the start of one of the longest eras of dominance in history: Mercedes'. The manufacturer's early bet on the new rules produced the W05, a car far above the rest. With the competition neutralised, the championship became an in-house affair between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, two childhood friends whose relationship steadily soured under the weight of rivalry. The fight was intense and tense, with clashes on and off track. Hamilton ultimately prevailed and claimed his second world title, six years after his first, in a season that also introduced the controversial double points at the Abu Dhabi finale.

The driver
Fernando Alonso is the most decorated Spanish driver in history and, for many, one of the most complete ever. The Asturian from Oviedo broke the Ferrari-Schumacher stranglehold with Renault, winning back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 and becoming the youngest champion in history at the time. What cemented his legend was not only those titles but his knack for wringing more from cars than they should give. Full profile →
