Historical context

In 2010 Red Bull had the fastest car but the title was not theirs from the start. Webber led in the summer; Vettel came back in the autumn. The internal tension between both drivers reached its peak. Abu Dhabi decided a championship the Australian could well have won.

The real 2010 season

The 2010 season was one of the most open and hard-fought of the modern era. Four drivers — Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton — arrived at the Abu Dhabi finale with mathematical title chances, something extraordinary. Alonso, in his first year at Ferrari, had led the championship and was the big favourite, but a disastrous strategy call left him stuck behind Petrov's Renault, unable to pass, while Vettel won the race from pole. The German thus took his first world title at 23, becoming the youngest champion in history and firing the starting gun on the Red Bull and Adrian Newey dynasty that would dominate the years to come.

The drivers

Sebastian Vettel4× world champion (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013)

Sebastian Vettel was the child prodigy who became a four-time champion before turning twenty-seven. He debuted with BMW Sauber in 2007, scoring on his first race, and in 2008 gave Toro Rosso a historic win in the Monza rain, becoming the youngest winner in history at the time. At Red Bull, alongside designer Adrian Newey, he forged a dynasty: four consecutive championships between 2010 and 2013. Full profile →

Mark WebberNo world title

Mark Webber was a tough, straight-talking and hugely popular driver, the most notable Australian of the modern F1 era. Combative both in and out of the car, he earned the paddock's respect after years fighting in modest teams like Minardi, Jaguar and Williams before joining Red Bull in 2007. As the team rose to the top, Webber enjoyed his finest hour in 2010, leading the championship for much of the year with the dominant RB6 and arriving in contention at the Abu Dhabi finale, where an unfortunate strategy cost him the title.
